What Is the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge?

The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge is a 24-mile circular walk with around 1,585 metres (5,200 ft) of ascent, taking in the three highest peaks in the Yorkshire Dales:

  • Pen-y-ghent (694 m)

  • Whernside (736 m)

  • Ingleborough (723 m)

The traditional challenge is to complete the full circular route within 12 hours, although many walkers now choose a more flexible approach.

A True Circular Route – Not Just Horton in Ribblesdale

While Horton in Ribblesdale is the most well-known starting point, it is not the only place to begin. The route is clearly marked, fully circular, and from most points you can easily see the next mountain ahead. This means:

  • You do not need a walking guide, but is an option for larger groups.

  • Navigation is straightforward in good conditions, New Yorkshire Dales App !

  • You can start from alternative locations to avoid crowds

On a busy summer Saturday, over 2,000 walkers can be on the route, with approx 80% starting from Horton in Ribblesdale. This often leads to bottlenecks, particularly on the ascent to the pinnacle of Pen-y-ghent, where queues are common.

Not an Easy Walk – Respect the Challenge and the Landscape

Despite its popularity, the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge is not easy. It is physically demanding, often done for charity, and requires preparation, fitness, and respect for the environment.

All walkers should follow the Yorkshire Dales Code of Conduct, including:

  • Keeping to marked paths

  • Taking all litter home

  • Respecting livestock, dry stone walls, and farmland

  • Being considerate of local residents and other walkers

Completing the challenge responsibly helps protect the landscape and ensures the route remains accessible for future generations.

A Growing Trend: One Peak a Day or Two Plus One

Increasingly, walkers are choosing to complete the challenge over two or three days:

  • One peak per day for a relaxed and scenic experience

  • Two peaks on one day, one on another for flexibility

This approach opens up the challenge to more people, reduces pressure on the paths, and allows time to enjoy the spectacular Yorkshire Dales scenery rather than rushing through it.
