What to Do in the Yorkshire Dales in September

Updated: Apr 7

September is a magical month in the Yorkshire Dales. As summer fades and autumn begins, the landscapes shift with rich colours, rural traditions, and cultural events. If you’re visiting the Dales this September, here are some of the highlights you won’t want to miss:

🌸 Heather in Bloom

One of the most spectacular sights in September is the heather moorlands in full purple bloom. Swaledale is especially famous for its sweeping carpets of heather, which are carefully managed for grouse shooting through traditional burning methods. Among the moors you’ll also find echoes of history — ancient sites like Maiden Castle above Reeth or industrial relics such as the lead mine flues above Cupola smelt mill on Grassington Moor. Do explore, but tread carefully, as some old mine shafts remain uncovered.

🐑 Agricultural Shows & Country Traditions

September marks the last of the Dales’ famous agricultural shows. Muker Show in Swaledale is a highlight — a traditional country fair with sheepdog trials, fell races, and local produce. These shows offer a real glimpse into rural life, showcasing the heritage and community spirit of the Dales.

📚 Walking & Festivals

Yorkshire Dales in September is a popular month for walkers, with long-distance trails like the Dales Way, Dales High Way, and Ribble Way busy with hikers enjoying cooler weather and colourful views. It also sees the start of the Richmond Walking & Book Festival, which blends scenic walks with author talks and literary events.
