July is one of the most vibrant months in the Yorkshire Dales. With long, light-filled days, school holidays beginning, and nature at its peak, the Dales come alive with events, markets, and classic countryside charm. Whether you’re a foodie, a music lover, or a fan of steam trains and traditional country shows, there's something for everyone. Here’s a round-up of what to look forward to this July in the Dales.
🌾 Nature in Full Swing
By July, the iconic flower-rich hay meadows of the Yorkshire Dales have mostly been cut, dried and carefully stored away to feed livestock through the winter. While the patchwork fields look neat and golden, pockets of late summer colour can still be found in nature reserves like Ashes Pasture, near Ribblehead, where wildflowers linger a little longer.
This is also a great time for spotting wildlife, enjoying butterflies in the sunshine, or taking an evening walk under some of the darkest skies in the UK. Don’t forget your camera – especially if you're visiting during a steam train day!
🚂 Steam Trains Over Ribblehead Viaduct In July
Watching a steam train puff over the majestic Ribblehead Viaduct is a highlight for many summer visitors. In July, you can catch this unforgettable sight on:1st, 2nd, 6th, 10th, 12th, 15th, 19th, 22nd, 26th and 30th.
Bring a picnic, perch on a hillside, and enjoy the sound and spectacle of steam travel against the backdrop of Ingleborough and Whernside.

🌼 Settle Flowerpot Festival
From early July through August, Settle turns into a wonderland of whimsy during the Flowerpot Festival. Quirky creations pop up all over town – from characters made of pots to full-on flowerpot sculptures. It’s free, fun, and makes for a fantastic family trail around the town.

🎡Traditional Agricultural Show in July arounf d the Yorkshire Dales
Summer in the Dales wouldn’t be complete without a good country show. These are a chance to experience local life at its most traditional – sheepdog trials, vintage tractors, produce competitions, and plenty of tea and cake!
Look out for:
Kilnsey Show (early in the month)
Bewerley Show
Reeth Show – just outside the Dales boundary, but worth the trip
Each show has its own flavour and is a lovely way to meet local farmers and makers.
🐄 Great Yorkshire Show (9–12 July)
Harrogate Showground
One of the biggest and best-known events in the region, the Great Yorkshire Show is a celebration of all things rural. Expect award-winning livestock, cutting-edge farming technology, shopping, live music, and show-stopping arena events. Perfect for a full day out.
🍴 Yorkshire Dales Food & Drink Festival (19–21 July)
Funkirk Farm, Skipton
This massive festival combines celebrity chefs (think James Martin, The Hairy Bikers), food stalls, cookery workshops, bars, artisan markets, kids’ activities, live music, and camping. It’s one of the UK’s top food festivals – and it's right on the edge of the Dales.
🚜 Masham Steam Rally (20–21 July)
A much-loved event for fans of vintage transport and steam heritage. Held just outside the Dales at Masham, this family-friendly event features traction engines, vintage vehicles, parades, stalls, and fairground fun. A great mix of nostalgia and entertainment.
🎭 Settle Victoria Hall – Live Performances and More
As England’s oldest surviving music hall, Settle Victoria Hall hosts a varied programme throughout July. Expect everything from folk music to theatre and film screenings.
Highlights often include:
Live folk or jazz performances
Summer drama productions
Family films and workshops
Check their website or local posters for the latest listings.

🧺 Settle Artisan Markets
Taking place on selected Saturdays in Settle Market Square, these vibrant markets bring together a wealth of local talent – from handmade jewellery and homewares to local cheeses, preserves, and art.
A great place to pick up a unique souvenir or gift while supporting local makers.
🪨 Geology Guided Walk – Dales Countryside Museum
Get to know the land beneath your feet with a guided Geology Walk from the Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes. This is a fascinating way to discover how the dramatic landscapes of the Dales were shaped over millions of years. Suitable for anyone curious about rocks, fossils, and natural history.
Plan Your July Visit
Whether you’re based in our cozy B&B, one of the lodges or the Cottage here at Ashes Farm, or simply passing through for the day, July in the Dales offers something memorable around every corner. From vibrant festivals to peaceful nature walks, the mix of celebration and scenery is unbeatable.
